Brass Wall Tiles

These brass wall tiles and panels start as flat sheets of solid brass about 1 mm thick. Each design is embossed by hand, the background is punched by hand to a fine texture, and the finished piece is given an aged bronze patina and sealed with wax. Every order is made for you once it is placed, which takes about two weeks.

What is in the range

There are three families. The largest is Celtic knot tiles: 37 single designs sold in sets, three mixed sets and two collections of 20 different knots, such as the Celtic Knot Brass Tiles set. Next come pattern tiles drawn from Moorish, Islamic geometric, Spanish, Moroccan, Arts and Crafts and Victorian ornament, along with Tudor rose, fleur-de-lis and thistle designs, such as the Moorish twelve point star. The third family is one-piece panels: tree of life designs, olive, lemon, pomegranate and date palm trees, folk art birds, a lotus and papyrus frieze and a floral mandala, such as the Round Crown Tree of Life.

Tile sets or a single panel

The Celtic tiles are 10 cm (3.9 in) square and come in sets of 20 to 60. Pattern tiles come at 20 cm (7.9 in) in sets of 8 to 20 and at 30 cm (11.8 in) in sets of 4 to 9, and some designs are also made at 10 cm in sets of 30, 45 or 60. Tiles are 6 mm deep with a raised rim and a hollow back, so they set in tile adhesive like any wall tile, or hang singly from a small hanger. Panels are 10 mm deep on a wooden backing board: square from 50 to 100 cm, landscape from 60 x 40 up to 100 x 60 cm, and the Andalusian star panel at 50 or 60 cm, alone or in sets of two or four.

The finish

The patina sits darker in the recesses and lighter on the raised relief, so the pattern reads from across a room. A soft, damp cloth is all the care it needs.

Where they go

Use them as a kitchen backsplash band, a decorative panel behind a range, a fireplace surround, a bathroom niche lining, a coffee station wall, an art grid above a desk or sofa, or an entry feature.

Choosing a design

Measure the wall first. Use 10 cm tiles for borders and accents, 20 or 30 cm tiles for a full backsplash band, and a panel when you want one focal point. Tiles and panels cannot be cut, so plan around whole pieces. By style, the Celtic knots suit Irish and Scottish homes, the Moorish and Islamic patterns suit geometric interiors, the Arts and Crafts and Victorian tiles suit period houses, and the trees and fruit suit kitchens and living rooms.
