Four handcrafted lines that live alongside our brass lighting: hand-carved mashrabiya woodwork, handwoven wool tapestries, furniture inlaid with mother of pearl, and hand-embossed brass wall tiles. Different crafts, one habit in common — everything is cut, woven, set or embossed by hand, so no two pieces come out identical.
Mashrabiya is the pierced wooden latticework of Arab architecture — screens, room dividers, doors, cabinet fronts and wall panels, cut and assembled by hand without nails. Each spindle is turned individually, which is why light through a mashrabiya panel never falls in a regular grid.
Egyptian Woven Tapestry is pictorial wall art: wool woven by hand on the loom, most of it freehand with no cartoon behind the warp, and many pieces signed by the weaver. Each piece is one of one.
Mother of Pearl Inlay is the Damascene tradition of setting shell and bone into wood. Mirrors, side tables, chests, wall shelves and backgammon boards, with every fragment of shell hand-cut to shape and laid one at a time — weeks of bench work behind a single mirror frame.
Brass Wall Tiles are solid brass sheet embossed by hand on a punched ground and finished in an aged bronze patina: Celtic knot tile sets, Moorish, Spanish and Arts and Crafts patterns for a backsplash or fireplace, and one-piece tree of life panels for the wall. Every set is made to order.
