An exceptionally large handwoven wool tapestry of Nile village life — mud-brick houses under date palms, women in black melaya carrying loads along the bank, a goat and a leopard-spotted tree, and a long procession of white ibis and egrets wading the blue water across the foot of the panel. The ground is a warm saturated yellow that lifts the whole scene.
At 278 x 152 cm this is a wall-sized work, woven in wool on cotton warp by hand over many months. Pieces at this scale are uncommon and rarely come to market; it is meant for a tall wall, a stairwell, or a double-height room, and can also be laid as a floor rug. Colour blocks are built up by hand-hatching, visible on close inspection.
