A complete coral reef, woven by hand at architectural scale: over nine feet of deep indigo water alive with schools of fish — silver, orange, powder blue, black and gold — descending a great column of light. Around them grows an entire reef: branching orange fan corals, jade seagrass meadows, cactus corals, striped anemones swaying like lanterns, a swarm of shrimp, and gardens of pink, red, and green coral across the sea floor. Hundreds of individually woven creatures and plants — no two alike, no pattern, no machine — every line decided at the loom by the weaver's hand and eye.
The piece is signed by the weaver in Arabic, woven directly into the fabric — the living tradition of Egypt's celebrated village tapestry weaving, whose finest large works hang in museums and private collections worldwide. A weaving of this scale represents months at the loom.
