HANDWOVEN EGYPTIAN WOOL TAPESTRY — SIGNED CORAL REEF SCENE — ONE OF A KIND
The reef at the meeting of light and deep: pale morning water on one side shades into midnight blue on the other, and between them the fish stream in every direction — schools of crimson and rose, gold and grey, and one great orange fish diving through the middle of it all. Below, a spotted white coral column rises beside orange anemones, feathery pink sea plants, and a scaled golden sea-mound. Every fish — dozens, no two alike — is woven freehand in the flat slit-tapestry technique: no printing, no machine, no pattern to copy, just dyed wool and the weaver's imagination, line by line.
The piece is signed by the weaver in Arabic, woven directly into the fabric — the living tradition of Egypt's celebrated village tapestry weaving. This is one of three underwater tapestries by the same weaver in our shop, each entirely unique.

An original textile artwork. The natural wool texture, slit-weave joins, and warp fringe at the edges are the signatures of true handweaving. Small irregularities are the hand of the artist, not flaws.
