HANDWOVEN EGYPTIAN WOOL TAPESTRY — SIGNED UNDERWATER SCENE IN BLUE — ONE OF A KIND

Beneath the surface again, in a wholly new weaving: schools of rose-pink and silver-blue fish drift through a column of light, orange and golden fish cross the deep indigo water in every direction, and the sea floor blooms with ferny green plants, a great olive leaf, and striped coral. Every fish — dozens, no two alike — is woven freehand in the flat slit-tapestry technique: no printing, no machine, no pattern to copy, just dyed wool and the weaver's imagination, line by line.

The piece is signed by the weaver in Arabic, woven directly into the fabric — the living tradition of Egypt's celebrated village tapestry weaving. This is one of two underwater tapestries by the same weaver in our shop — sister pieces, each entirely unique.

HANDWOVEN — ONE OF ONE
An original textile artwork. The natural wool texture, slit-weave joins, and warp fringe at the edges are the signatures of true handweaving. Small irregularities are the hand of the artist, not flaws.

WHERE IT WORKS
Pure delight on a wall — wonderful in a living room, study, bathroom, or a child's room or nursery, where the fish become a storybook. One of one; when it's gone, it's gone.
