A vintage Egyptian-style mashrabiya screen from the 1980s: a wood latticework room divider of three beech panels in a brown finish, each inlaid with mother of pearl and bone on both sides, so the screen is finished whichever way it faces. Each panel measures 77 in (197 cm) high by 24 in (60 cm) wide — tall enough to genuinely divide a space.
The mashrabiya is one of the defining elements of traditional Arabic architecture: a projecting oriel window enclosed with carved wood latticework, in continuous use from the Middle Ages to the mid-20th century, most often facing the street but also used internally onto a courtyard.
