This antique Syrian mother of pearl inlay chest is a 19th-century wedding chest in solid walnut — the most important commission a Damascene cabinetmaker received, built to hold a bride's dowry and outlast the marriage it celebrated. The mother of pearl inlay is intertwined with delicate metal strands, every detail hand-cut and assembled into the geometric and floral patterns of traditional Damascene furniture.
The front panel carries a central medallion surrounded by symmetrical motifs, and the sides are set with inlaid designs that give the chest real architectural presence. The piece has been professionally restored, preserving its historical integrity while making the structure sound for daily use.
As a statement of Middle Eastern antique furniture it needs no help; as a storage trunk it still earns its floor space.
