HANDWOVEN EGYPTIAN WOOL TAPESTRY — SIGNED MOTHER AND CHILD — ONE OF A KIND
The most tender piece in our collection: a mother in a flowing red gown gathers her child into her arms, her dark hair falling beneath her white veil, while three veiled women rest on the terraced hillside behind them and the village houses climb the slope in soft terracotta, cream, and mauve. The grasses deepen from gold to near-black around the central pair, so all the light in the weaving falls on the embrace.
What makes this piece truly extraordinary is how it was made: the weaver works without any guide on the loom — every figure, fold, and line improvised in thread as the weaving grows. Human figures are the greatest challenge in handwoven tapestry, and here the faces, hands, and the sweep of the red robe are rendered with the confidence of a painter. No two pieces are ever alike; each tapestry is a one-of-a-kind expression of the weaver's artistic genius.
The piece is signed by the weaver in Arabic, woven directly into the fabric.
HANDWOVEN — ONE OF ONE
An original textile artwork. The natural wool texture, slit-weave joins, and warp fringe are the signatures of true handweaving. Small irregularities are the hand of the artist, not flaws.
