Why Moroccan Pendants Work Over Kitchen Islands
A kitchen island sits at the center of the room. Whatever hangs above it becomes the focal point whether you planned it that way or not. Moroccan pendant lights earn that attention.
The pierced brass throws geometric shadow patterns across your countertop and surrounding walls. The effect changes throughout the day — subtle in morning light, dramatic at dinner. Guests notice. It is the single most common compliment our customers report.
We handcraft every pendant from solid brass in our workshop. Brass handles kitchen humidity and temperature swings without corroding, flaking, or discoloring. A decade from now, your pendants will have developed a richer patina. That is the point.
The Spacing Formula
Getting the spacing right is more important than picking the perfect pendant. Uneven spacing looks wrong no matter how beautiful the fixture is.
The rule: Divide your island length by the number of pendants plus one. That gives you the distance between each pendant and from the end of the island to the first pendant.
Example
A 6-foot island with 2 pendants: 72 inches divided by 3 = 24 inches. The first pendant hangs 24 inches from one end, the second pendant 24 inches from the other end, with 24 inches between them.
A 7-foot island with 3 pendants: 84 inches divided by 4 = 21 inches. Each pendant is 21 inches from the next, with 21 inches of clearance on each end.
Minimum spacing between pendants: Never closer than 24 inches center-to-center. If the math puts them closer, use fewer pendants.
Size Rules by Island Length
| Island Length | Number of Pendants | Pendant Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 4 feet | 2 | 8"–10" |
| 5–6 feet | 2 | 10"–12" |
| 7 feet | 3 | 8"–10" |
| 8 feet | 3 | 10"–12" |
| 9–10 feet | 3–4 | 10"–12" |
The common mistake: Going too big. A 16-inch pendant that looks perfect over a dining table will overwhelm a kitchen island when you hang two or three of them. Scale down. Let the cluster do the work, not individual size.
Hanging Height Over the Island
Hang the bottom of each pendant 30–36 inches above the counter surface. For most kitchen islands, that puts the bottom of the pendant around 66–72 inches from the floor.
If you have bar seating: Lean toward 36 inches above the counter. At 30 inches, the pendants can hang in someone's sight line when they are sitting on a tall stool. You want the light slightly above eye level for a seated person.
If you have high ceilings (10+ feet): Do not raise the pendants to fill the vertical space. Keep them at 30–36 inches above the counter. The long drop cord or chain actually looks better in a tall room — it draws the eye down and creates intimacy in a large space.
Finish Considerations for Kitchens
Oxidized Brass: The Kitchen Workhorse
Our oxidized brass finish is the most popular for kitchens, and for good reason. The dark, antique patina hides fingerprints, cooking grease, and minor scratches. You will not need to wipe these down after every meal. The warm tone works with wood cabinets, white kitchens, and dark cabinetry alike.
Black Brass: The Modern Choice
If your kitchen has black hardware, black faucets, or a matte black range hood, our black brass pendants tie everything together. The matte finish is similarly low-maintenance in a kitchen environment.
Polished Brass: Beautiful but High-Touch
Polished brass over a cooking area shows every fingerprint and grease splatter. If you cook regularly and do not want to polish your fixtures monthly, choose oxidized or black instead. Save the polished brass for the dining room.
Open vs. Closed Designs: Light Output Matters
This is the most important practical consideration for kitchen pendants, and most guides skip it.
Pierced brass pendants (open pattern) cast those beautiful shadow patterns, but they diffuse light in all directions. You get ambient light and atmosphere, not focused task light. If your island is where you chop vegetables and read recipes, you will want supplemental lighting.
Our recommendation for kitchens: Use Moroccan pendants for ambiance and install recessed can lights or under-cabinet LED strips for task lighting. This gives you the best of both worlds — dramatic shadow patterns at dinner, bright work light when you need it. A dimmer switch on the pendants lets you adjust the mood.
Some of our pendants have a more open bottom, which directs more light downward onto the counter surface. If task lighting is a concern, ask us which designs offer the most downward light.
Popular Kitchen Combinations
The Classic Three
Three matching 10-inch oxidized brass pendants over a 7-foot island. This is our most ordered kitchen configuration. The repetition creates rhythm, the oxidized finish is effortless to maintain, and the 10-inch size is proportional without crowding.
The Statement Pair
Two 12-inch pendants over a 5–6 foot island. Slightly larger scale for kitchens where the island is the main event. Works well with polished or black brass if the rest of your kitchen lighting handles task work.
Mixed Metals
If your kitchen already has mixed metal hardware (brushed nickel faucet, brass cabinet pulls), choose pendant finishes that anchor to one of those metals. Our oxidized brass pairs well with brushed gold or champagne hardware. Our silver-plated finish works alongside chrome or nickel.
What Ships With Each Pendant
Every pendant from our workshop includes UL-listed wiring, a ceiling canopy, mounting bracket, and hardware for standard US hardwire installation. The chain or cord is adjustable — you can shorten it to hit your target hanging height.
If you are replacing existing pendant lights or a single fixture with a multi-pendant setup, you may need an electrician to add junction boxes. One junction box per pendant.
