What Size Light Fixture Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Calculator
Posted by E Kenoz on 3rd Apr 2026
Choosing the right size light fixture is the difference between "that looks perfect" and "something feels off." Here's a quick reference guide with sizing formulas for every room.
The Universal Formula
Room length (ft) + Room width (ft) = Fixture diameter (inches)
Example: 12×14 foot room = 26-inch fixture

Room-by-Room Guide
Kitchen Island
8-12 inch pendants, one per 2 feet of island. Hang 30-36 inches above counter.
Dining Room
Fixture should be 6-12 inches narrower than the table. Hang 30-36 inches above table surface.
Living Room
Use the universal formula. For a 16×20 room, a 36-inch chandelier is ideal.

Bedroom
12-20 inch ceiling fixture, centered. For 8-foot ceilings, use flush mount.
Bathroom
8-12 inch fixture for small baths. Sconces flanking mirror: 4-5 inches wide each.
Hallway
8-10 inch flush mounts, one every 6-8 feet.

Entryway/Foyer
Standard ceiling: 18-24 inch fixture. Two-story foyer: 30-36 inch chandelier.
When in Doubt
Go one size larger rather than smaller. An undersized fixture disappears in a room — a slightly oversized one becomes a statement piece.
