How to Clean and Maintain Moroccan Brass Lighting

Solid brass Moroccan fixtures are built to last generations. The only maintenance they need is occasional cleaning — and even that depends on whether you want a polished shine or a natural patina.
If You Want to Keep It Shiny
- Weekly: Dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth
- Monthly: Wipe with a damp cloth to remove fingerprints and buildup
- Every 3-6 months: Apply a brass cleaner (Brasso, Bar Keepers Friend, or a paste of lemon juice and baking soda). Rub gently with a soft cloth, rinse, and buff dry.
If You Prefer Natural Patina
Do nothing. Over time, brass develops a warm, darkened patina that many people prefer over polished shine. This is the same aging process you see on antique brass fixtures, door knockers, and ship hardware. The patina is purely cosmetic — it doesn't affect the structural integrity of the brass.

For Oxidized or Bronze Finishes
These finishes are pre-patinated — just dust them regularly with a dry cloth. Do not use brass cleaner on oxidized or bronze finishes, as it will strip the intentional patina.
What Not to Do
- Never use abrasive cleaners or steel wool — they scratch the metalwork
- Never use ammonia-based cleaners near brass — they can cause discoloration
- Never spray cleaner directly onto the fixture while it's hanging — spray onto a cloth first to avoid drips into the socket
Our Moroccan fixtures are solid brass through and through — not brass-plated. This means scratches don't reveal a different metal underneath, and the fixture will look beautiful for decades with minimal care.
